Tom managed the girls team to victory in the 1970s including the game against Netherlands in 1973 and again in 1974 and in the seven years he managed the women’s national team they only lost 2 games. In 1973 he was offered the job managing the England Women’s Team by the FA and while he was at first a bit tentative about taking on this role, Tom soon became committed having seen the girls play at a cup final in Luton. Tom trained and managed a number of players who went on to play professionally including Gordon Hill and goalkeeper Paul Barron.

He managed a number of football clubs alongside his job as lecturer in PE at Borough Road College including the college football club and continued Football Coaching gaining the highest accreditation of FA Full Staff Coach in 1975. Tom played for a number of amateur football clubs including Hayes and Southall before qualifying as football referee and Football Association Coach in 1961. One of his students, Alan Hudson, went on to play for Chelsea, Arsenal, Stoke City and England. Here Tom taught the boys football helping enforce some discipline and structure to their lives. Tom represented his County in a number of sports and even qualified for Junior Wimbledon in August 1958 however his real love was football.įollowing his teacher training in mathematics and PE at the college of St Mark’s and St John’s Chelsea, Tom went to Chester College to specialise in PE before returning to London to start his teaching career in Notting Hill and then Chelsea. Growing up Tom excelled in a wide range of sports including tennis, cricket, cross country running and football. Tom Tranter (1940–2005) was an academic, footballer and football coach.
